UK women waste millions on footwear, report says

09/03/2005

According to a survey on wasteful consumption carried out by UK energy company Npower, women in the country buy large amounts of footwear they never wear. The report says they possess £637 million worth of high heels that have never touched a pavement.

More than four in ten women in Britain have bought shoes they have never worn, encouraged by sales bargains and out of the desire to improve their physical appeal.

Other motives for buying footwear include keeping up with fashion trends and facing peer pressure. Some are prepared to pay extortionate prices for this confidence-boosting treat.
