Ukraine’s cabinet proposes large reductions on duties for footwear and clothing

08/03/2005

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a bill that will reduce duties on clothes, footwear and food products by as much as 100 times. The bill is to be fast-tracked through the Parliament to bring the country’s regulations in line with the Protocol, signed by Ukraine and World Trade Organisation.

Prime Minister Yuliya Timoshenko said duty reduction would prevent the smuggling of these products by reducing their price in the consumer market. The average duty on goods is expected to equal 2%-3% of the value, as opposed to the 100%-300% in place at the moment.
