Allen-Edmonds sees positive results following implementation of new manufacturing system
Approximately one year after implementing a new, lean manufacturing system, American-based men's footwear maker Allen-Edmonds Shoe Corporation is reporting impressive results. In January 2004, Allen-Edmonds unveiled a manufacturing plan designed to offset rising production costs, increase profitability and improve responsiveness to customers. Lean concepts such as Just-in-Time, cellular manufacturing and the Toyota Sewing System were integrated into the company's largest production facility in
"We made it a top priority to collect the right data," stated Jim Kass, director of operations and the system's architect. "We have already seen a 30% increase in productivity, reduced damages by 14% and our orders are filled and on-time 100% of the time. Even better, the numbers culminate in a 15% decrease in direct labour and overhead costs."
