Allen-Edmonds sees positive results following implementation of new manufacturing system

Approximately one year after implementing a new, lean manufacturing system, American-based men's footwear maker Allen-Edmonds Shoe Corporation is reporting impressive results. In January 2004, Allen-Edmonds unveiled a manufacturing plan designed to offset rising production costs, increase profitability and improve responsiveness to customers. Lean concepts such as Just-in-Time, cellular manufacturing and the Toyota Sewing System were integrated into the company's largest production facility in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Key performance data were collected to track the new system's effectiveness.

"We made it a top priority to collect the right data," stated Jim Kass, director of operations and the system's architect. "We have already seen a 30% increase in productivity, reduced damages by 14% and our orders are filled and on-time 100% of the time. Even better, the numbers culminate in a 15% decrease in direct labour and overhead costs."

Founded in 1922, Allen-Edmonds Shoe Corporation manufactures men's footwear, accessories and cedar products. Manufactured in the USA, Allen-Edmonds products are available at stores worldwide and via the Internet.
