PTA-NZ demands end of sales tax

21/02/2005

The Pakistan Tanners Association (Northern Zone) (PTA-NZ) has demanded that the government abolish sales tax on imports and domestic sales of wet blue and finished leather. The demand was made by PTA-NZ chairman, Mohammad Musadaq, during a meeting with members of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). As the compulsory deduction of withholding tax on the purchase of raw hides and skins is increasing the cost of export-oriented production, he suggested that the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) should be instructed to remove raw hides and skins from SRO 600(I) 91 or that the SRO should be amended in order to restore parity amongst the companies and registered firms.

Mr Musadaq also demanded that the government take stringent measures to check the smuggling of livestock to Afghanistan and other bordering countries via land routes, as the industry is facing an acute shortage of raw hides and skins. He also urged the authorities concerned to allocate funds from the EDF to individual units for the installation of treatment plants.

Responding to the demands, LCCI president, Mia Misbah-ur-Rehman, said that as the business community plays a key-role in the economic stability of the country it is vital that any problems must be resolved as a priority. He assured the PTA (NZ) representatives that the LCCI would extend all out co-operation to them for an early resolution of the issues.
