AIFF attracts record numbers of visitors

21/02/2005

The Australian International Furniture Fair 2005 (AIFF), which took place at the Sydney Exhibition Centre, February 4-6, recorded a record numbers of visitors, attracting a total of 6,600 over the three days, from all parts of Australia and overseas. This represented a 10% increase in visitors over last year's inaugural event.

“Our second Australian International Furniture Fair was an unqualified success.  It attracted a high rate of decision makers seeking to immerse themselves in a huge and diverse range of covetable products, with the result that a terrific amount of business took place over the three days.  Exhibitor feedback was glowing, and the Fair showcased the contemporary furniture design scene at its very best,” said Martin Lewis, general manager of the Furnishing Industry Association of Australia, NSW (FIAA).

The show included award ceremonies that highlighted young designers such as Gary Galego who won the Concept Award for his "Shell Chair", which used plantation grown hoop pine plywood, a material proven to generate efficiency in both the structure and manufacture of chairs. Leather is vacuum moulded to the surface of the chair in a technique developed by Galego, who has been making a name for himself on the world stage through his designs.

Awards for Excellence in Furniture Design were conferred in a wide selection of categories.  Most notable entrants were Tessa Furniture, Inglewood, and Morgan Furniture, which all received multiple awards.

Morgan Furniture’s Contempo Recliner picked up two awards – Excellence in Furniture using Leather and Excellence in Motion Furniture.
