South Korean pork imports up, beef and chicken down

17/02/2005

South Korea imported pork worth $352.61 million in 2004, an 80% rise compared with 2003, but imports of beef and chicken fell sharply in 2004 due to fears over mad cow disease and avian flu, according to the Korea Customs Service.

The total amount of pork imported reached 186,738 tonnes, compared with 175,949 tonnes of beef, with most shipments arriving from Chile, Belgium and Denmark. 2004 has marked the first case of larger pork over beef imports, emphasising the scale of meat-related concerns.
