Foundation laid at Bangladesh Leather Industry City

17/02/2005

Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, laid the foundation stone to inaugurate construction work for building Dhaka Leather Industry City in Savar on February 15. This new development - which is set to cost $48 million – will house the tanneries that are currently located in Hazaribag.

The modern leather industry city is being built on 200 acres of land at Tetuljhara with 195 industrial units, which, directly and indirectly, will create jobs for nearly 100,000 people. The prime minister formally unveiled the foundation plaque and switched on construction machinery at the development site that is being managed by the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation.

Apart from modern facilities, a modern effluent-treatment plant will be set up in the city so as to reduce health risks to workers and employees which were a cause for concern at the Hazaribag tanneries. The prime minister said export earnings from leather and leather products will multiply when the tanneries from Hazaribag and other parts of the country relocate to this new hub.
