Thailand prepares poultry bird flu vaccines

Thailand has prepared 100,000 doses of avian flu vaccine for the treatment of a domestic outbreak of the disease, according to the country’s Health Ministry. More laboratories have also been opened in 12 provinces to ensure quick bird flu-related test results.

The measures have been put in place due to widespread concerns about the possible return of avian flu in the country’s poultry. More actions are in the pipeline including the release of a manual on how to deal with the outbreak and an exchange of know-ho with Vietnamese experts.

Although the possibility of animal-to-human transmission of the disease is viewed as unlikely by the country’s experts, latest reports mention a suspect human bird flu case in a six-year-old boy from the Bangrakam district who has been in close physical contact with chickens and is currently under constant medical supervision.

So far more than a thousand chickens have been culled in two villages in the Phrompiran district.
