Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between South Africa and Australia in January, an investigation into the South African automotive leather industry is to be launched in an attempt to establish best assistance to the segment in the revised motor industry development programme MIDP scheduled for implementation in 2012.

Objectives for the reviewed MIDP include developing an internationally competitive and growing automotive industry and providing a stable employment in South Africa. The government and the industry will spend the next year preparing a scheme acceptable to both and compliant with WTO objectives.
