Japan accepts US grading system for age determination

15/02/2005

Japanese technical experts have approved the US grading system of age determination for cattle, resolving the outstanding technical issues on resuming US trade in beef.

Japan has agreed to the resumption of beef trade for cattle and related products from animals 20 months of age or younger but progress in beef trade negotiations had been stalled due to the inability to agree upon a method to determine the age of cattle.

As export sales are a large part of US cattle and beef industry, the decision is welcomed by the US government and industry in the hope of removing other barriers in beef trade with Japan.
