Russia restricts pork imports from Italian region
Swine vesicular disease (SVD) is an acute, contagious viral disease of swine characterised by fever and vesicles with subsequent erosions in the mouth and on the snout, feet and teats. The infection spreads fast via animals’ excrements and can be carried over by contaminated vehicles. Although international veterinary sources say the swine vesicular disease may have low morbidity rates in herds, high rates are registered when the pigs are in pens.
According to the Inspection Russia has been free of the disease for the past 30 years.
The restrictions will be lifted only if raw pork in the region undergoes a special thermal treatment.
