Russia plans to increase meat import quotas by no more than 2.5% a year, according to Sergei Mitin, the country’s Deputy Agriculture Minister. Russia and the USA have compromised on this figure during recent talks on Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Zurich.
The agreement that Russia and the USA plan to sign states that quotas for meat imports to Russia will not be increasing by more than 2.5% a year until 2009, when Russia is expected to join the WTO. There will also be a yearly insignificant increase for pork, said Mr Mitin.
Quotas for poultry imports to Russia in 2005 are 1.05 million tonnes, for pork import 467,400 tonnes and for beef import 457,500 tonnes.
