Tax-Free clothing and footwear shopping in USA

04/02/2005

For one week, started January 31, New Yorkers can shop tax-free for clothing and footwear purchases that cost less than $110 per item. The week-long sales tax exemption waives the state's 4.25% sales tax on clothing and footwear, and also allows counties and cities across the state to elect to exempt their local portion of the sales tax. Fifty-two counties and 17 cities, including New York City, will participate in this one-week exemption.

"New York families can take advantage of this great opportunity to shop tax-free and save money on clothing and footwear purchases," said New York’s governor, Greg Pataki said. "This programme provides real tax relief and we're pleased that most local governments are joining us and providing even greater savings to shoppers by exempting their local sales tax as well."
