Pakistan leather exports increase 63%

Pakistan’s leather sector performed extremely well during December 2004 reporting a rise in total exports of 63.85% to reach $59.3 million compared with $36.2 million in November 2004. The positive figures have been attributed to a large increase in the export of leather garments. In this sector exports increased to $22.42 million from $9.81 million during this period.

According to data from the Federal Bureau of Statistics, for the month of December, Pakistan exported tanned leather worth $20.741 million, leather goods valued at $32.66 million and footwear of $5.9 million compared with $15.72 million, $17.43 million and $3.04 million respectively in November. These figures show that leather exports were up by 31.95%, leather goods by 87.35% and footwear by 93.92% from November 2004.

Total export for the six months July to December 2004 stood at $372.54 million compared with $381.75 million in same period a year ago, a slight decrease year-on-year.
