31/01/2005

According to Fujian customs officials, Jinjiang City – a Chinese sports shoe production centre - exported 438.57 million pairs of shoes worth $1.04 billion in 2004, breaking the city’s export record in both quantity and business volume.

Compared with 2003, the quantity of shoes increased by 9.4%, whilst business volume rose 11.7%. The quality of shoes made in the Jinjiang City is improving and so the unit price also increased significantly in 2004.

The EU, US, Japan, Korea, South Africa and Russia were the major importers of the region’s shoes, accounting for half of Jinjiang’s total shoe exports. The EU remained the primary importer, with 26.7% of total exports going to this region, the USA accounted for 10.4%, and Japan and Korea 5%. Officials predict that exports will increase still further in 2005 following the ending of quotas in the EU.
