28/01/2005

Internationally renowned shoe designer Jimmy Choo, Head of Fashion and Textiles at Britain’s De Montfort University (DMU), and Julie King are just two of a handful of fashion experts who travelled to Hong Kong to give advice to the Hong Kong education sector. Organised by the British Council in Hong Kong, the Education Festival event will give local key training providers a chance to tap into the expertise of top UK fashion specialists.

Hong Kong is rapidly becoming a world centre for the fashion industry and six distinguished speakers including Julie and Jimmy were asked to share their experiences and insight at seminars, held on January 25.

Jimmy Choo, who lives in London and accepted an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from DMU Leicester last summer, is considered to be one of the best footwear designers in the world. DMU boasts the only specialist Footwear Design degree course in the UK as well as range of other successful fashion courses, and now its reputation for academic excellence is spreading in China.

Julie King was previously assistant professor and course leader for the only MA Fashion & Textile Design in the Asia Pacific region and also worked as a colour trend consultant for Hong Kong manufacturers. She has retained extensive links with a variety of Institutions throughout China.

At the event in Hong Kong Julie talked about creating specialist fashion training courses which nurture design talents, foster creativity and prepare students for industry, whilst Jimmy Choo spoke of his perspective of fashion and design in London.
