Bangladesh tanners celebrate at Eid

26/01/2005

There are two sides to every story, and this year’s Eid was positive or negative depending on where you stand. Tanners and leather exporters were happy as they managed to purchase the hides of sacrificial animals at prices some 5%-20% lower than last year; however, those selling were far from pleased with the prices achieved from the sacrificial hides - which account for some 45% of the country’s annual raw leather.

The price received for the hides was not the only thing that traders had to contend with this year. Two Bangladeshi men died and 46 became ill after being drugged by thieves hoping to steal their hides. The villagers took their sacrificial animals to Dhaka in the hope of receiving a higher price than at the rural markets, but fell ill after consuming food or drink that had been contaminated with sleeping pills and other drugs.
