UK police force provides dogs with protective footwear

24/01/2005

UK police force in Northumbria has equipped their dogs with protective footwear to prevent the animals’ paws from broken glass and other sharp objects whilst tackling public order situations. The force is also to obtain shields and protective suits for their dogs to increase the animals’ safety whilst on duty.

The “Bark’n’Boots” are supplied by the Hampshire-based company Canine Spirit and are available in five sizes and three colours. According to the supplier, the ergonomic design of the footwear mimics natural curve and shape of the ankle and paw, the reinforced toe and loop Velcro closure ensures secure fit, the 500-denier Cordura uppers are durable and flexible and the Reprotek sole made from recycled tyre rubber offers exceptional grip and durability.

Northumbrian police say the four-legged colleagues can now be deployed to more missions such as post-burglary searchers without the risk of being injured.

Canine footwear is also used by working dogs in the UK Fire Service search and Rescue Dogs Teams.
