Danier Leather profits fall in Q2

24/01/2005

Canada’s Danier Leather Inc., the Toronto-based specialty leather apparel designer, manufacturer, and retailer has announced a significant drop in its profits for the second quarter, ended December 25, 2004. Profits fell by $1.8 million compared with the same period in 2003, dropping from $9 million to $7.2 million. A significant decrease in sales was also recorded, falling from $79.3 million in the second quarter last year to $71.3 million in the current financial year.

The company claimed that second quarter results were impacted by weak consumer spending on outerwear, customers delaying purchases until closer to Christmas and into the post-Christmas period, and unseasonably warm weather.

A further point was that Boxing Week sales took place in the third quarter this year versus the second quarter last year. Sales for the week ended January 1, 2005, which included Boxing Week, increased by $5.8 million over the same week last year.

Danier Leather’s products are sold exclusively at its 99 shopping mall, street-front, and large format stores or through its corporate sales division and online through its website.
