Ban on Bulgarian poultry lifted

21/01/2005

The ban on exports of live poultry, hatching eggs, fresh poultry meat, game meat and their derivatives has been lifted by order of the Bulgarian Agriculture Minister Mehmed Dikme.

The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has also agreed to the European Commission proposal to limit the suspension of imports to a single district of Kardzhali in the south of the country.

The ban was imposed at the end of last year after several cases of Newcastle Disease were reported in the Bulgarian village of Radino, near Kardzhali. It is a contagious disease in poultry that can cause major losses in the sector but has no impact on human health.
