USDA considers keeping borders shut

19/01/2005

The US Agriculture Department (USDA) is considering the withdrawal of its plan to reopen the border to Canadian beef and cattle imports from March 7, after a third case of BSE was confirmed in Canada.

This follows the federal lawsuit by R-Calf United Stockgrowers group to block the USDA from lifting the ban, introduced in May 2003 when the first Canadian cow was diagnosed with the disease.

Meanwhile Canadian vets, including Dr Brian Evans, and politicians, such as Ralph Klein, have been urging the USA to reopen its borders assuring them Canadian beef is safe and that there is no need for mass culling of animals.
