US pork industry breaks export record in 2004

The US pork exports totalled $2.015 billion in the first 11 months of 2004, according to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), almost half a billion dollars more than the value of US pork exported in the whole of 2003.


2004 will be the 14th consecutive record breaking year for US pork exports by volume. In 1991 US pork exports broke the previous record set in 1989 and have been growing each year since. In 1991 the US pork industry set a new record by exporting 181,361 metric tons of pork and pork variety meat for a value of $387 million. Today the USA exports more than five times the volume and value of the 1991 record.

 

January – November US pork exports were 36% higher in volume (928,693 mt) compared to the same period of 2003 and 40% higher in value at $2.015 billion. Exports to Japan were 14% higher in volume (284,704 mt) and 22% higher in value ($893.7 million) with Mexico retaining the first position in tonnage with a 73% increase in volume to 329,767 m.t. and a 98% increase in value to $511.2 million.
