Poland’s Skotan tannery to cease production
Skotan tannery, one of the biggest Polish tanneries, is to be sold, leased or its production outsourced, following a recent management decision. The tannery is well renowned for high quality calf and pigskins and has been in the market for over 140 years.
The tannery is listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) and owned by the Karkosik family. WSE analysts consider the move as a first step towards the end of leather production. A similar move was made by Brzeg tannery, also in the hands of the Karkosik family, several weeks prior to this decision, which now serves as a plastic waste recycling facility.
In the first three quarters of 2004 Skotan tannery recorded losses of nearly 4 million PLN (approximately €1.1 million).
