55 Salamander outlets to be saved
Shoe retailer Salamander, a subsidiary of German company Garant Schuh + Mode AG, is to keep 55 branches nationwide, 13 more than originally planned. According to Achim Neumann, from the trade union Verdi, 130 jobs that were due to be lost can now be saved. The workers’ representatives at Salamander Schuh GmbH and the insolvency administrator Hendrik Hefermehl have agreed to this compromise.
Salamander became insolvent following the bankruptcy of the parent company Garant Schuh + Mode AG. 396 out of 900 jobs were originally planned to be cut; this figure will now only be 266.
In other news, Ulrich Back has resigned from the management board of Garant Schuh, of which he has been a member since 1994. However, he will carry on advisory role at the company.
