24/12/2004

The first Cairo International Leather which took place December 9-12 has been deemed a great success by organisers ICE and Assomac. The event that was opened by Egypt’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Industry, Rashid Mohamed Rashidad, attracted 118 participants, including representatives of over forty Italian companies. The Egyptian exhibitors spanned many sectors of the industry, including leather, footwear, tanning machinery, chemicals and man-made products.

A footwear production workshop was also set up at the event using Italian machinery at which visitors could see how mechanised footwear production has been introduced in Egypt. The workshop provided a concrete demonstration, via the production of sandals and court shoes, that quality products can be produced with a low initial investment. The initiative was popular with the numerous visitors and could provide a blueprint for other North African countries.

Marketing was covered by speakers Peter Mangione, Chairman of the USA Federation of Footwear Importers, and Massimo Donda, Chairman of the European Retailers’ Federation, who addressed a conference on the subject of the US and EU footwear markets.
