American-based specialty chemical company, Rohm and Haas, has announced the winners of its annual Otto Haas Awards for Scientific Achievement and Technical Excellence. The awards, named after the co-founder of the company, recognise the scientific excellence of individual scientists, researchers and technical service employees.

The awards are divided into two categories—Scientific Achievement and Technical Excellence. The Scientific Achievement Award recognises new and innovative contributions to science while the Technical Excellence Award is given to those who provide superior technical support to both their colleagues and Rohm and Haas customers.

Two scientists honoured with the Otto Haas Awards for Technical Excellence were Joseph Lachowski, a principal engineer at Rohm and Haas Electronics Materials in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and Morris Wills, a senior scientist in Plastic Additives at the Spring House Technical Centre in Pennsylvania. Recipients of the Otto Haas Award for Scientific Achievement included: Dr. James Bohling, research scientist, Advanced Biosciences in Spring House; Dr. Jitendra Singh Goela, principal scientist, Advanced Materials in Woburn, Massachusetts; and Dr. Wei Zhang, senior scientist, Architectural and Functional Coatings in Spring House.

The recipients of the Otto Haas Awards each received a $5,000 grant which is donated to a University of the winner’s choice. This year, award recipients chose to donate their grants to Drexel University in Philadelphia; Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts; Boston University; Hope College in Holland, Michigan and Nanjing University in China.
