Canada proposes changes to BSE-related feed controls
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has proposed amendments to federal regulations banning high-risk material from animal feed, pet food and fertilisers, aimed at protecting Canadian cattle from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
The proposed amendments would prohibit the use of specified risk material (SRM) in animal feeds - such as cattle tissues that may contain the infectious agent that causes BSE. The Canadian government already requires the removal of SRM from the human food supply and in 1997 banned the feeding of most mammal proteins to ruminant animals.
