South Africa culls more ostriches due to avian flu

09/12/2004

South Africa is set to begin further ostrich culling following the discovery of avian flu on three farms in the Graaff-Reinet region. Approximately 2,200 birds will be culled in the coming weeks in order to contain the disease.

Officials stressed that the disease is contained and that the culling is taking place as a measure to avoid any further contamination. Although none of the birds have shown any symptoms of the disease, antibodies of the virus were discovered at the three sites.

This is the third cull in the area that has seen 23,000 birds destroyed over the past six months.
