EU improves animal transportation welfare

01/12/2004

EU member states have agreed to implement new rules designed to benefit the welfare of animals transported across Europe. The deal focuses on increasing accountability by identifying who is responsible for what throughout the process and introduces enforcement tools such as checks via a satellite navigation system scheduled for 2007.

The agreement is a softer option to dropping journey times, which proved a bone of contention during April talks, grinding them to a halt. It aims at reducing animal stress levels at times such as loading and unloading and at upgrading vehicle standards.

The travelling times remain unaltered with pig transportation lasting up to 24 hours without a break but permanent access to water, horse transportation of up to 24 hours with water every 8 hours, young animals (still on milk) of no more than 18 hours with a one hour break and with sheep and goat transit time of maximum 29 hours with the same one hour break.
