01/12/2004

The Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan visited BASF’s plant in Ludwigshafen on November 23, at the start of a tour of Germany. The Vice Premier met for discussions with Dr. Jürgen Hambrecht, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, as well as with Dr. Andreas Kreimeyer, the Board member who is responsible for the Asia region. Vice Premier Zeng also visited BASF’s environmental centre, which monitors environmental data at the Ludwigshafen site.

BASF started trade with China in 1885. Today, the company’s activities in China are an important part of its Asian strategy. In order to meet increasing demand in China, BASF and its partners have invested approximately €4 billion in the country since 2001and continue to do so. This makes BASF one of the largest foreign investors in the Chinese chemical market.

At its site in Shanghai – one of the focuses of BASF’s investments in China – the company has developed and implemented a concept for fire protection at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park. This involved providing the fire brigade with ultramodern equipment and training the firefighters appropriately.

BASF has also started implementing a similar concept at its new Verbund site in Nanjing, China.
