01/12/2004

Bilateral trade between neighbouring India and Pakistan is flourishing more than ever before. Two-way trade for the quarter April to July tripled to reach $186.36 million from $64.41 million for the same period in 2003. If trade continues to increase at the same pace, it could reach $500 million for the current financial year.

During the three months, Indian exports saw a large increase, rising by an incredible 328% to $167.38 million from $39.1 million a year earlier. The main exports to Pakistan were chemicals, dyes and intermediates, rubber, and pharmaceuticals.

Pakistan reported exports to India of $18. 98 million which was lower than the same period last year when exports reached $25.31 million, however, it is believed that this figure will increase significantly by the end of the fiscal year. Pakistan’s main exports were cotton yarn, textiles, footwear, fruit and nuts.
