Hong Kong has announced that it is to lift the ban on Canadian beef although some restrictions will remain in place. Applications to import Canadian-produced beef will be considered immediately, but only boneless beef from cattle under 30 months old will be considered. A valid health certificate will also have to be produced for each animal.
Canadian beef has been banned in Hong Kong, when the first case of BSE was discovered. However, with the implementation of improved BSE screening measures, the Hong Kong government has deemed it safe to resume imports of young cattle with all brain and spinal cords removed prior to importation.
