NZ initiative set up to tackle labour shortage in leather industry
A new initiative has been launched by the New Zealand Meat Industry Association (MIA) with the NZ Industry Training Organisation (NZITO) and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) to redress the lack of well-trained labour in agro-based industries.
The NZITO, which is owned by the country’s dairy, meat and leather industries, has been able to provide vocational training and trainers to place people in suitable positions. The programme is based on the new MSD model for demand driven employment in the meat and leather industries. “With improved selection, shorter lead times and a more practical focus we are helping fill vacancies and keeping industry producing,” said general manager of NZITO, Carl Ammon.
The programme has only just started, but by Christmas around 200 people will be on track for employment within the industry. It is expected that the initiative could train up to 2,000 suitable candidates annually.
