Suspected BSE case proves to be negative

29/11/2004

Following a tense week after the discovery of a suspected case of BSE in the USA, the Ames Iowa Laboratory has announced that the animal thought to have been infected has proved negative following further tests for the disease.

The initial screening of the animal was said to be inconclusive, which caused a great deal of concern amongst farmers who are trying to restore the credibility of cattle and meat from the USA. Following the all clear from the laboratory, it is hoped that talks with Taiwan and Japan, as well as other countries, will be able to continue and move a step closer to restoring the sales of US beef.

The USDA at no time gave details of the location of the ranch on which the animal was found, nor did they reveal what kind of animal was suspected of having the disease.
