Christmas retail boom expected in new Zealand

25/11/2004

New Zealand retailers are set to have a very merry Christmas if the results of a survey conducted by research group Galaxy are anything to go by. According to the statistics collected, one in five New Zealanders is planning on spending more - not only before Christmas, but also in the post-Christmas sales – with clothes and footwear leading the way as the most popular items.

However, shoppers have not become overly-generous. Whilst most plan to buy more, they refuse to pay over the odds and are demanding better value for money. The survey showed that 20% of New Zealanders plan to spend more this year, 42% intend spending more on certain items but less on other products.

27% of those questioned said that they planned to spend more on clothes and footwear; 23% said toys; 20% plan more expenditure on home and garden furnishings. 58% of shoppers stated that they actually plan to spend any extra money after the festive season in the post-Christmas sales.
