Högl sacks 47 workers in Austria

23/11/2004

Högl Shoe Fashion GmbH, Austrian ladies shoe manufacturer, will dismiss 47 workers at its Taufkirchen factory. The remaining 83 will be moved to the company’s headquarters in logistics and shoe prototype production.

The move is designed to optimise the employment between Austria and Hungary, according to managing director Gerhard Bachmeier.

Last year Högl purchased a bankrupt shoe factory in Hungary from the ailing Salamander group. The vast majority of Högl production has been moved there, as production in Austria is “impossible from economic terms” to quote Gerhard Bachmeier.

The Hungarian plant employs 600 workers while some 300 are still employed in Austria, 150 in Slovakia and 100 in Croatia. Mr Bachmeier says the move will increase the effectiveness of the company.
