Pakistan leather exports decline

Pakistan has reported that the country’s leather sector exports declined from $260.932 million to $229.011 million in the first four months of the current financial year (July to October). This 12.23% fall in exports has been put down to a poor performance by leather garments.

 

According to statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics, leather garment exports declined by 26% in the four months, falling from $132.190 million in 2003 to $97.675 million. In October alone leather garment exports fell by 28% from $25.184 million to $18.076 million year-on-year.

 

Footwear exports also dropped from $27.742 million to $20.857 million, but on a positive note October’s figures for footwear actually reported a slight increase as exports reached $4.9 million compared with $4.774 million for the previous month. Glove exports also grew in the period rising from $21.457 million to $27.26 million on a year-on-year basis – an increase of 27%.

 

The export of finished leather increased, but the growth was a nominal 1.96% for July to October, rising to $77.171 million from $75.686 million a year earlier. However, month-on-month exports showed a decline, slipping from $18.399 million in September 2004 to $15.645 million in October – a fall of nearly 15%.

 

The export of other leather goods and products showed impressive growth for the first four months of the fiscal year, increasing by 56.81% from $3.857 million in 2003 to %6.048 in 2004.
