The German shoe supplier Wortmann has posted best business results so far for the financial year 2003/04, with the company having increased its sales by nearly €10million to €464 million. “Despite difficult circumstances we are in a very good mood,” said chief executive Horst Wortmann.

Since 1969 Wortmann has been handling some 56 million pairs of shoes every year, 70% of which are manufactured in Asia. The company sees its future in China and plans to relocate to Asia. It has already bought facilities for a development and technology centre in China. Wortmann is expecting an increase in turnover of more than 10% next year.

The group employs only 600 people but has approximately 27,000 workers producing for it worldwide. Wortman produces inexpensive ladies’ shoes which account for about 80% of the entire production. About 90% of shoes are sold in Europe and the remaining 10% in North America, South Africa and Australia.
