Hungary’s industrial output up but leather sector down in September

16/11/2004

Hungary's industrial output rose by 6.7% in September 2004 compared with September 2003, according to final figures released by the country’s Central Statistical Office (KSH). In the first nine months of the year industrial output rose by 8.9%.

The gross output of manufacturing, the largest industrial sector, was up by 7.3% in September and by 10.5% in the January to September period.

Four sectors within manufacturing saw a decline in production in September, with the largest drop of 15.5% in the leather industry. The downward trend in the industry has registered a 17.1% fall in production this year so far.  The machinery and equipment segment has continued its three-month decline, falling by a further 0.6% in September. The manufacture of pulp and paper products was down by 7.2%.

The KSH has attributed the decline to new EU regulations introduced in May 2004 such as the end of state subsidies and import duty.
