New Zealand’s Livestock Improvement develops KiwiCross bull

10/11/2004

Livestock Improvement - a New Zealand provider of artificial breeding services -has announced that a new crossbreed of bull, the KiwiCross, has been added to its range of top sires. Until recently, the breed was only obtainable through on-farm crossbreeding, but it is now available to breeders worldwide.

The breed is the result of many years of crossbreeding and is said to be particularly popular due to its longevity which translates into fertility and production efficiency.

The company’s head of genetics services, Peter Gatley, says more than 200,000 artificial inseminations will be performed in the near future from the first four Kiwi KiwiCross bulls.

Nearly 40% of replacement cattle in dairy herds are now crossbred, combining the classical dairy breeds such as Holstein-Friesian and Jersey.
