Mixed tidings for adidas-salomon

05/11/2004

There must have been mixed emotions at adidas-salomon over the past couple of days. On the one hand the company reported a 19% increase in profit to reach €179 million ($228 million) for the fiscal quarter; on the other hand the company has had to recall 200,000 basketball shoes.

The shoe models Superstar Ultra and Pro Team basketball shoes are reported to be faulty, as part of the inner sole on the heel can break off or tear during use, which could cause injury to the wearer. Two cases of people suffering injuries have been reported in the USA. On a more positive note adidas-salomon has said that the recall will not affect the company’s increased earnings target of 20% forecast for 2004.

Impressive as the results are for the third quarter, it was not good news across the board for the company. Whilst sales in Asia and the USA grew, European results showed a decrease of 4%, the first fall in a decade.
