Pakistan leather exports increase, manufacturing slips

01/11/2004

The Pakistan Federal Bureau of Statistics has released figures on the export of leather and leather goods for September showing a month-on-month increase of 2.6% in exports of finished leather and products. Total exports amounted to $55.141 million compared with $53.748 million in August. Pakistan exported finished leather worth $18.399 million compared with $16.669 million in August; $31.968 million in leather manufactured goods such as garments, gloves and accessories compared with $32.351 million; and $4.774 million in footwear compared with $4.728 million in August.

However, despite the slight increase in exports, the larger picture is far from positive. Leather manufacturing fell by 1.18% in September and exports for the first three months of the fiscal year from July to September also indicate a decrease. Total exports of leather goods in the first quarter dropped from $187.664 million to $182.723 million in a year-on-year comparison. This equates to an overall decrease of 2.63% in the export of finished leather and leather goods.
