Bulgaria free of BSE

26/10/2004

Bulgaria is free of BSE, according to officials from the National Veterinary Service, who performed the annual analysis of results of the “mad cow” programme in accordance with the EU diagnostic standards.

The statement arrived after Bulgaria’s Minister of Agriculture announced that no certificates for beef and veal had been issued since July 2004 to prove the safety of the meat. Yet some MPs expressed their concern saying uncertified meat could mean untested meat, potentially posing even a greater risk to people’s health.

Apart from yearly analysis of the programme Bulgaria has a daily control for disease prevention scheme in place.
