Consumer spending falls in UK footwear industry

25/10/2004

According to recent figures released, consumer spending on footwear in the United Kingdom has dropped over the past ten years. A decade ago, spending on shoes accounted for 1% of the country’s total consumer spending, but currently only makes up 0.7% of the total figure.

Sports shoes account for a large proportion of footwear sales in the UK and the world’s ‘top three’, Nike, adidas, and Reebok are still dominating the British market.

This is without a doubt due to the fashionable image of these brands, as research has found that only 20% of the sportswear sold in British shops is actually used for sport or exercise.
