Footwear boosts Czech retail sales
Czech retail sales increased by 3.7% for the month of August compared with the same period in 2003, proving cynics wrong that the country’s entry into the European Union would lead to an increase in prices and a slowdown in retail sales.
Sales of non-food items increased 7.1% - one of the largest increases of the year so far – but the largest growth was seen in shops selling specific items such as household goods, furniture and electronics. The footwear sector topped the table though recording a sales increase of 15% in August. This growth is accredited to an increase in wages and a feeling of economic optimism in the country.
