Bluetongue virus detected in Spain
The bluetongue virus, an insect-transmitted disease of sheep, cattle, goats and other ruminants, has been detected in a number of sentinel cattle in south
Export of cattle, sheep and goats from the area has been restricted. The Spanish authorities have implemented disease control measures which include a ban on the movement of ruminants in a 150km radius of the suspected holding.
The European Commission is imposing further restrictions which will ban exports of animals susceptible to bluetongue, and their genetic material, from the following areas of Spain: Provinces of Cadiz, Malaga and Seville; Province of Huelva – region of La Palma del Consado and de Ayamonte; Province of Cordoba – region of Lucena, de Montilla and de Posada and Province of Granada – region of Alhama de Granada and de Loja.
