Lamb death rate drops in South New Zealand

13/10/2004

After a period of considerable lamb losses in Southland, New Zealand, caused by adverse weather conditions, slink skin operators have noted a reduction in processed animals - to what they regard as more normal levels.

According to estimates half a million lambs may have died and farmers report losses of half or more of their born lambs. Despite continuing snowfall, the weather has lost some of its cruel bite, making conditions a little easier on farms which are still lambing.

Until recently slink skin processors were so overwhelmed they were forced to bury large numbers of lamb carcasses.
