Romanian authorities burn counterfeit footwear

13/10/2004

A pile of around 100,000 fake pairs of sports footwear has been burnt in the Romanian town of Megidia, in a demonstration against counterfeit products.

The shoes were imported from China and their selling value has been estimated at about $2.2 million. The organisers invited one of the lawyers from Puma to the event, who praised the efforts of the Romanian authorities to fight illegal imports of forged shoes into the country.

Genuine Puma, Nike, adidas and Reebok footwear, which the counterfeits imitated, were offered to Romanian orphanages, together with branded garments, as a “thank you” token for the country’s anti-counterfeit move.
