Brazil’s footwear exports up 18% in nine months

12/10/2004

According to figures released by the Brazilian Footwear Association (Abicalçados), the country exported $1.346 billion worth of footwear between January and September 2004, 18% more than in the same period of 2003.

Most of the exports went to the UK where imports of Brazilian products reached $82.8 compared with $62.6 million for the same period last year, a 32% rise. Spain imported $29 million worth of Brazilian shoes, a 116% rise, compared with $13.4 million for the same period in 2003, whilst Germany imported $13.9 million, a 43% increase from $9.7 million.

The improved performance is the result of strategies implemented three years ago to promote Brazilian footwear to foreign markets. Its European efforts have paid off the most.

The association predicts the sector will end the year with a $1.8 billion figure.
