All 23 remaining cows on the farm in Nara, Japan, where one animal tested positive for BSE, are free from the disease, the local government has announced. The negative results mean that a ban on the movement of livestock at the farm has been lifted. The 8-year-old animal that was found to be infected was slaughtered on October 23.
Meanwhile, representatives from the USA and Japan are holding talks this week in an effort to end the ban on US beef imports into Japan. The USA has been unable to export beef to Japan since the discovery of an animal infected with BSE last December. Japan was the largest consumer of American beef outside the USA before the ban was imposed.
